In a career that has been marked by comical gaffes and emotional miscues, Raja Casablanca's goalkeeper has a chance to continue his standout Club World Cup by stealing the spotlight from Ronaldinho and Atletico Mineiro. While fans adore Ronaldinho for his bright personality and on-field flair, Khalid Askri is giving the Brazilian playmaker a run for his money in Morocco.Askri's clutch saves in an extra-time quarter-final victory over Mexican club Monterrey helped Raja advance to the semi-finals, where the Moroccan team will face the Copa Libertadores winners.
The player dubbed "the unluckiest goalkeeper in the world," Askri has given the hosts a chance of becoming the first African team to reach the Club World Cup final.

Askri earned the title in September 2010 when a pair of mistakes cost his then-club FAR Rabat.
He celebrated a penalty save, only for the backspin to carry the ball into goal to his shock.
He followed that up weeks later with an embarrassing giveaway that led to a goal and he ripped off his shirt and stormed off the field despite pleas from his team-mates to continue.
Askri has showed none of those traits as the host club looks to reach Saturday's final.
"These videos made me very well-known. It was because of them that I had lots of goalkeepers from all around the world calling me to show their support, even (Gianluigi) Buffon,'' Askri said.
"`I hope he saw the game (against Monterrey), because he would have seen a different player.''
While Atletico are playing in the event for the first time, Raja competed in 2000 and are aiming to become the first team from outside of Europe or South America to reach the final in the tournament's present format.
The Moroccan side will just have to avoid feeling star struck when Ronaldinho emerges for the South American champions.

"`This has been a dream come true. It's been a long time since the country has had a good result to celebrate. Now we have nothing to lose, but we want to make the final,'' Askri said. `
"Playing against a team containing Ronaldinho is another dream for us.''
Ronaldinho has rediscovered his best form since joining from Flamengo. The former Barcelona player has helped forwards Jo and Diego Tardelli flourish, with holding midfielder Gilberto Silva allowing the playmaker freedom to provide from the midfield.
"`I love being the main creator, it's something I've always done,'' Ronaldinho said this month. "For me it works perfectly, on a practical and emotional level. It just makes sense.''
Also on Wednesday in Marrakech, Monterrey play Egyptian side Al Ahly to decide who finishes in fifth and sixth places.

City go out after Real draw

Wednesday 21st November 2012 21:42

Manchester City have been eliminated from the UEFA Champions League following a 1-1 draw at home to Real Madrid.

Karim Benzema opened the scoring on a night that sealed Manchester City's fate in Group D
City's slim hopes of qualification going into the game depended upon results elsewhere and the Premier League champions winning their remaining two fixtures.

That looked unlikely when Karim Benzema took advantage of slack marking from Maicon to convert Angel Di Maria's right-wing cross inside 10 minutes.

But City improved in the second half and the equaliser came from the penalty spot when Alvaro Arbeloa was adjudged to have pulled down Sergio Aguero in the box.

Arbeloa was given a red card for a second bookable offence and Aguero got up to convert the spot-kick, setting things up for an exciting finale.

There would be no fairy-tale turnaround for the home side though and they struggled to create another chance as Real held on to ensure their own passage into the last 16.

Jose Mourinho's men had appeared in the mood to wrap things up quickly as they peppered the City goal early on and Sami Khedira should have added to the lead soon after the opener.

The Germany international danced past two challenges but then delayed his shot and Joe Hart came off his line to smother the ball at the midfielders feet.

City once again seemed uncomfortable with their 3-5-2 formation and Roberto Mancini switched to a back-four midway through the first half.

That produced a more upbeat performance and the home side carried that into their second-half display, nearly finding an equaliser just after the hour-mark when Iker Casillas denied Aguero from close range.

That equaliser did come in the end but it was not enough for City and they go out of the Champions League in the group stage for the second consecutive season.
