The striker was over the moon with his equaliser and says the Viola are desperate to reach the quarter-finals

By Stefan Coerts

Mario Gomez has promised Fiorentina fans that he will score plenty more goals this season after netting a late equaliser in the 1-1 Europa League draw against Juventus.

Arturo Vidal put the Bianconeri in front in the first-leg of the last-16 tie, but Gomez scored his first goal since returning from a lengthy injury lay-off to set up an exciting second leg.

"Today's goal was an emotional one. I am very happy with it," the former Bayern Munich man told Mediaset Premium.
Gomez: Many more goals to come

"I know how important my goals are for this club and for this city. It is not easy to get back after five to six months out of action.

"I feel that my fitness and my power are improving and I will score just like before once I'm in peak condition again."

Gomez then went on to voice his delight with his side's draw and stressed that they never gave up, not even after Vidal's early opener.

"I am pleased for the team, because it was not an easy game in Turin. Juventus are strong opponents. We want to reach the next round. We never gave up and will continue to do our utmost in the return."

The second leg takes place in Florence next Thursday.

The Spain midfielder completed his £37.1m move from Chelsea on Saturday and is expected to go straight into the starting line-up against the side managed by former United striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Mata's arrival is a boost for United, who exited the Capital One Cup on penalties in their semi-final against Sunderland last week on the back of a 3-0 top-flight defeat at Chelsea.
Manager David Moyes’ team drew 2-2 at Cardiff in November in the first meeting between the two sides since 1975 and since then Solskjaer has replaced Malky Mackay at the Welsh club. The 40-year-old can expect a rapturous reception on his return to Old Trafford, where he spent 11 years during his playing days and enjoyed a major role in such a successful period in United's history, including scoring the winner in the 1999 UEFA Champions League final.
The Norwegian has been charged with the task of keeping Cardiff in the Barclays Premier League, but they slipped to the bottom of the table with a 4-2 defeat at Manchester City in their last top-flight match.
Cardiff need to improve their away form if they are to avoid a return to the Championship, as they have won only once on their travels in the top flight. Solskjaer's side did triumph at Bolton Wanderers in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Saturday, but Cardiff have taken just a point from their last six Barclays Premier League games.
The Cardiff boss will be hoping that United’s Robin van Persie (thigh) and Wayne Rooney (groin) are not yet ready to return. Moyes will also assess the fitness of Rio Ferdinand (knee), Nani (hamstring) and Michael Carrick (ankle), but captain Nemanja Vidic will not feature as he serves the second match of his suspension following his red card at Chelsea.
Kenwyne Jones could make his Cardiff debut if a swap deal with Stoke City involving Peter Odemwingie goes through in time and forward Jo Inge Berget could make his league bow after his move from Molde last week.  Fraizer Campbell, Steven Caulker and Craig Noone are expected to return to the starting line-up.
Manchester United (from): De Gea, Lindegaard, Buttner, Evans, Evra, Fabio, Ferdinand, Jones, Rafael, Smalling, Carrick, Cleverley, Fellaini, Fletcher, Giggs, Januzaj, Kagawa, Nani, Valencia, Young, Hernandez, Rooney, Van Persie, Welbeck, Zaha.
Cardiff City (from): Lewis, Marshall, Amondarain, Caulker, Connolly, Hudson, McNaughton, Theophile-Catherine, Turner, Cowie, Daehli, Eikrem, Gunnarsson, Kim, Medel, Mutch, Noone, Whittingham, Bellamy, Campbell, Cornelius, Odemwingie, Smith, Velikonja, Berget.
Solskjaer's side did win at Bolton Wanderers in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Saturday, but Cardiff have taken just a point from their last six Premier League games.

The Cardiff boss will be hoping United strike duo Robin van Persie (thigh) and Wayne Rooney (groin) are not yet ready to return.
Moyes will also assess the fitness of Rio Ferdinand (knee), Nani (hamstring) and Michael Carrick (ankle), but captain Nemanja Vidic will not definitely not feature as he serves the second of a two-match suspension following his red card at Chelsea.
Kenwyne Jones could make his Cardiff debut if a swap deal with Stoke City involving Peter Odemwingie goes through in time and forward Jo Inge Berget could make his bow following his move from Molde last week.
The likes of Fraizer Campbell, Steven Caulker and Craig Noone are expected to return to the starting line-up.

Head-to-head
Reading have won 16 and lost 15 of the 38 league and cup games against Sheffield United, spanning 34 years.
The clubs were in the Championship last season and Sheffield United are unbeaten in five matches against the Royals (won four, drawn one).
Their only previous FA Cup meeting was in the last 16 in February 1998, when the Blades won 1-0 at home and went on to reach the semi-finals.

Reading
Reading, the 1927 semi-finalists, have reached the last eight in two of the last three seasons.
The Royals were knocked out in the third round by League One Stevenage last season, and are facing a third-tier club for the third tie running, having already dismissed Crawley in the current run.
Brian McDermott's side, who have won their last three games in all competitions, are one of four teams from the Premier League in danger of falling to third level opposition.

Sheffield United
Sheffield United, 31 spots lower than the Royals, are looking for a fourth win in five away FA Cup matches, and a place in the fifth round for the first time in four seasons.
Since beating Premier League Manchester City in the fourth round in January 2008, the Blades have lost on all four occasions they have been drawn against top-flight clubs.
The Bramall Lane outfit have won the FA Cup four times, but not since 1925, and the most recent of their six appearances in the final was 1936.
