Liverpool owner John W Henry admits Suarez did have €49 million clause

Liverpool owner John W Henry admits Suarez did have €49 million clause
The Reds chief confirms that a bid from Arsenal just slightly over the Uruguayan forward's release clause was rejected during last summer's tense transfer negotiations

By Chris Davie

Liverpool owner John W Henry has confirmed that Luis Suarez did have a €49 million release clause in his old contract but revealed that the club refused to sell the striker to Arsenal because "contracts don't seem to mean a lot in England".

Arsene Wenger's side submitted a €49m-plus-€1 bid in an attempt activate the Uruguay international's clause but the Reds claimed that the player only needed to be informed of offers over €49 and were not obliged to sell.

Liverpool maintained their no-sale stance regarding Suarez throughout the summer transfer window and the forward signed a new long-term deal with the club in December.

"Luis Suarez is the top scorer in the English Premier League, which is arguably the top soccer league in the world," Henry is reported to have said at the Sloan Sports Analytics Conference.

"He had a buyout clause of £40m. Arsenal, one of our prime rivals - this year we're tied for second - we're actually second because of goal difference - offered £40m plus £1.

"What we've found is that contracts don't seem to mean a lot in England - actually, in world football.

"It doesn't matter how long a player's contract is, he can decide he's leaving.

"We sold a player, Fernando Torres, for £50m, that we did not want to sell - we were forced to. Since apparently these contracts don’t seem to hold, we took the position that we're just not selling.

"It's been great for Luis, it's been great for us."

Nigeria's Dike out of World Cup

The striker had high hopes for 2014 but his dreams of representing the Super Eagles in Brazil have been devastated by injury

Nigeria's Dike out of World Cup
Toronto FC striker Bright Dike has been ruled out of Nigeria's World Cup campaign after suffering a torn Achilles.

Dike had been expected to play a key role for Toronto FC in 2014 and was a candidate for the Super Eagles' World Cup squad, but his latest injury has put an end to those dreams.

The injury comes almost two years after Dike suffered the very same problem with the Portland Timbers. He worked his way back from that injury and played well enough to attract the attention of the national side.

The 27-year-old showed some flashes of his pedigree for the Canadian club in 2013, but it was his goalscoring performance in Nigeria's 2-2 friendly clash against Italy in November that saw him rise to prominence.

Dike's injury will put more pressure on Toronto's forward pairing of Jermain Defoe and Gilberto and leave TFC scrambling to add further attacking options heading into the 2014 season.

Borussia Monchengladbach will look to keep their UEFA Europa League hopes alive when they welcome champions Bayern Munich on Saturday.
Lucien Favre’s men sit in eighth place, three points and two positions off Eintracht Frankfurt, who occupy the last UEFA Europa League spot.
A win for Monchengladbach could prove vital in their bid to secure European football next season, as seventh-place Hamburg host Bayer Leverkusen while Freiburg look to retain their grip on fifth spot when they meet Schalke.

Monchengladbach have been in patchy form of late, winning just three of their last six games, these victories coming against already relegated Greuther Furth, Augsburg and Mainz. This is in stark contrast to the Bundesliga champions, who capped off their home campaign with a resounding 3-0 win over Augsburg before receiving the league trophy.
Bayern have won eight of their last nine league matches, drawing the other against runners-up Borussia Dortmund, conceding just two goals in their last six league games.
Jupp Heynckes’ men also have the UEFA Champions League final against Dortmund to think about and the head coach has employed a strategy of rotating his squad in recent weeks. However, he told the club’s official website he would use the next week, including the game against Monchengladbach, to prepare for the final at Wembley.
“In the course of the next few days of training, we’ll reiterate everything we need for our game plan and the essential things we’ll need for success at Wembley,” Heynckes said.

Borussia M.Gladbach
  • Martin Stranzl and Roel Brouwers compete for a spot at centre-back.
  • Havard Nordtveit and Thorben Marx both have chances to start in central midfield.
  • Up front, manager Lucien Favre has several options. Mike Hanke and Branimir Hrgota could get chances from the start again, with the latter in top form at the moment.
Bayern Munich
  • Jerome Boateng returns from suspension and will most likely replace Daniel van Buyten at centre-back.
  • Javi Martinez and Bastian Schweinsteiger could start in central midfield again, with Luiz Gustavo remaining on the bench.
  • Manager Heynckes will most likely field his strongest XI again, with the Champions League final only a week away.
