Four-time World Player of the Year Lionel Messi became Barcelona’s all-time leading goalscorer, including friendlies and unofficial matches, with a double against Osasuna on Sunday.

The Argentine already held the club record for goals in official matches, but has now scored 370 goals for the Catalans in all to overtake Paulinho Alcantara who scored 369 goals in 357 games as a Barca player between 1912 and 1927.
Messi opened the scoring at the Camp Nou with a lovely flicked finish from Alexis Sanchez’s cross.
And after Sanchez and Andres Iniesta had extended the hosts advantage, Messi drilled home his 30th goal of the season to make it 4-0.

Ronaldo will be hard to stop in Clasico: Mascherano

BARCELONA-
The 29-year-old defender has warned his Blaugrana team-mates that the Portuguese can score from out of nowhere, but has stressed Lionel Messi is the best player he has ever seen.
Javier Mascherano has acknowledged that Barcelona face a tough task to stop Cristiano Ronaldo in Sunday’s Liga game against Real Madrid.
The Portugal international has been in stunning form in 2013-14, scoring 41 goals in 37 appearances in all competitions, and Mascherano has warned his team-mates that they cannot afford to give the prolific attacker any space.
“Cristiano is an extraordinary player who has won the Ballon d’Or for that exact reason. He can score a goal from out of nowhere,” the versatile Blaugrana defender told Goal.
“He has a lot of quality and a tough job awaits when we face him. It will be hard to stop him and I hope that he will not be at his best on Sunday.
“We will try to keep him on a tight leash and not give him any space, but he’s the kind of player who can still hurt you even if you mark him tight.
“In the end, players like him are among the best in the world. With Ronaldo, his goals are often the result of his ability rather than of defensive mistakes.”
Nevertheless, Mascherano has insisted that Barcelona possess an even bigger threat in Lionel Messi.
“Leo just keeps improving his own records,” the 29-year-old said of his fellow Argentine. “We are talking about a player who has marked an era.
“He will continue to score goals in the years to come as he is still young.
“It’s hard to find words to describe Leo. Every positive word seems to have been used already to praise him.
“Is he better than [Diego] Maradona? It’s all subjective because everybody looks at things differently.
“I think that Leo has shown a lot of things. I don’t like to compare them as they played in different eras. All I can say is that Leo is the best player I have seen in my life.”
The versatile defender then went on to discuss this weekend’s Clasico and made it clear that Barca prefer to do their talking on the pitch rather than make bold claims in the build-up to the game.
“You don’t say that you’re superior,” the former Liverpool midfielder argued. “You have to show these things on the pitch. We have to go out there and win in order to show who’s best.
“Madrid currently top the table and it’s up to us to give our best. We must realise that it’s a final for us and need a great day.
“There are no guarantees going into this game. We have lacked a certain consistency in 2014 that we did have in previous years.”
Barcelona beat Madrid 2-1 at Camp Nou earlier this season but go into this weekend’s fixture at the Santiago Bernabeu third in La Liga, four points behind the table-topping Blancos.

Gritty Gunners can pass Champions League Bayern test, says Wenger

BY AGENCIES

LONDON-
Arsene Wenger insists Arsenal have no reason to fear Bayern Munich as they prepare to face the Champions League holders in the last 16 first leg on Wednesday.
Arsenal v FC Bayern Muenchen - UEFA Champions League Round of 16-1718993Just 12 months after they crashed out of Europe’s elite club competition at the hands of the German giants, Wenger’s team have an opportunity for revenge after being drawn to face Bayern at the same stage.
Arsenal were outclassed in the first leg last season as Bayern, who were then managed by Jupp Heynckes, cruised to a 3-1 victory in north London.
But the Gunners responded with a shock 2-0 win in the return game and came close to competing a stunning fightback before bowing out on away goals.
Winning in Munich proved a major boost for Wenger’s side, who had lost their way at that time but finished the season strongly and have maintained their impressive form for much of the current campaign.
Yet Bayern, now coached by former Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola, are arguably an even more formidable force this season than they were last year, when they won the Champions League, Bundesliga and German Cup.
The Bavarians will swagger into the Emirates Stadium on a 46-match unbeaten run in the Bundesliga.
They lead the German top-flight by 16 points, allowing them to focus fully on retaining the Champions League crown they won against Borussia Dortmund at Wembley last year.
But Wenger remains optimistic and the Gunners manager is confident the experience of last season’s encounters will stand his players in good stead as they seek to end Bayern’s reign as holders.
“I think we know them better, individually the players,” he said.
“We will be in a better condition hopefully, because last year was after the disappointment of losing against Blackburn in the FA Cup, to play Bayern three days later it was very difficult for us.
“I think in the league as well we were in a much more difficult position. Now we are mentally better prepared to go into a game of that stature.”
While Bayern have swept aside all challengers under Heynckes and now Guardiola, Arsenal’s trophy drought has stretched into a ninth year.
Still, the Gunners’ French midfielder Mathieu Flamini sees no reason for his team-mates to go into the tie with an inferiority complex.
Citing Sunday’s gritty 2-1 FA Cup fifth round win over Liverpool as proof of Arsenal’s improved spirit and mental strength, Flamini said: “What I will say about this season is that I see a great commitment, I see everyone working very hard on the pitch and helping each other.
“We know it won’t be an easy game because Bayern are a very strong team, but we are Arsenal, we have big ambitions.
“We will do everything to qualify for the next round in the Champions League.”
Arsenal will be without suspended Spanish midfielder Mikel Arteta, but Bayern have more significant absentees.

France winger Franck Ribery is sidelined after buttock surgery, while Swiss forward Xherdan Shaqiri suffered a thigh injury after scoring twice in Saturday’s 4-0 win over Freiburg.
Even those injuries are unlikely to perturb Guardiola, whose side are respectful of the dangers posed by Arsenal without being intimidated by the Premier League team.
“We’re not going there for a 0-0 draw, we want to win in London, of course,” Bayern captain Philipp Lahm said.
“It won’t be easy, they have put some confidence back in the tank after the Liverpool result.”
Centre-back Jerome Boateng believes Arsenal are “stronger” than last season and he claimed Mesut Ozil has added an extra menace to their attacking play, even though the Germany international has endured an up and down first season in English football.
“Mesut Ozil is their key player and we have to be wide awake,” Boateng said.
“We have to prove on the pitch that we are better. We don’t want to go into the return match chasing a result.”

Man City on alert for Suarez threat

suarez
BY AGENCIES

Manchester City midfielder James Milner says that his side will be facing one of the country’s outstanding players when they host Luis Suarez and Premier League leaders Liverpool on Thursday.
Uruguayan striker Suarez has already scored 19 league goals this term despite having been suspended until the end of September for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic last season.
His run of form has helped Liverpool go top with a run of four straight wins, in which they have scored 17 goals, while City, who could move above the Reds with a win, have scored 16 in a similar run of four victories.
As City look for a second title in three seasons, Milner feels that the visit of Liverpool, and the following home game against Crystal Palace, offer City a real opportunity to take charge in the title race.
“(Suarez) is having a pretty good season,” said the England midfielder.
“He’s a dangerous player. We have come up against dangerous players so far this season, but he will definitely be right up there, so we will need to keep him quiet.”

Pellegrini rubbishes Aguero to Barcelona reports

The Argentina international has been linked with a move to Camp Nou, but his Manchester City manager has dismissed the rumours and says the 25-year-old is staying at the Etihad.
Manuel Pellegrini has dismissed reports that Sergio Aguero could leave Manchester City for Barcelona in the summer.
378008_heroa
Despite an injury-hit season restricting him to just 17 Premier League starts, Aguero has still struck 15 goals, fuelling rumours of a move to the Catalan outfit.
With speculation mounting ahead of the summer transfer window, Pellegrini moved to quell talk of a Barcelona bid for the 25-year-old, and insists that Aguero is happy at the Etihad Stadium.
“[My response] is exactly the same as what I respond to all the other links during the whole year,” Pellegrini told reporters.
“You cannot talk every week about players that are coming here and the players going out. Aguero is a Manchester City player, he is very happy here and the club is very happy with him.”
Pellegrini also confirmed that Aguero is set to miss the Manchester derby on March 25, stating: “At the end of next week he will start training with the rest of the squad.”
Manchester City were recently knocked out of the Champions League round-of-16 by Barcelona, withPellegrini receiving a two–game touchline suspension by Uefa for criticising referee Jonas Eriksson following his side’s 2-0 first-leg defeat to Barca.
Los Blaugranas were drawn against Primera Division rivals Atletico Madrid in the quarter-finals of the Champions League on Friday morning.

Liverpool owner John W Henry admits Suarez did have €49 million clause

Liverpool owner John W Henry admits Suarez did have €49 million clause
The Reds chief confirms that a bid from Arsenal just slightly over the Uruguayan forward's release clause was rejected during last summer's tense transfer negotiations

By Chris Davie

Liverpool owner John W Henry has confirmed that Luis Suarez did have a €49 million release clause in his old contract but revealed that the club refused to sell the striker to Arsenal because "contracts don't seem to mean a lot in England".

Arsene Wenger's side submitted a €49m-plus-€1 bid in an attempt activate the Uruguay international's clause but the Reds claimed that the player only needed to be informed of offers over €49 and were not obliged to sell.

Liverpool maintained their no-sale stance regarding Suarez throughout the summer transfer window and the forward signed a new long-term deal with the club in December.

"Luis Suarez is the top scorer in the English Premier League, which is arguably the top soccer league in the world," Henry is reported to have said at the Sloan Sports Analytics Conference.

"He had a buyout clause of £40m. Arsenal, one of our prime rivals - this year we're tied for second - we're actually second because of goal difference - offered £40m plus £1.

"What we've found is that contracts don't seem to mean a lot in England - actually, in world football.

"It doesn't matter how long a player's contract is, he can decide he's leaving.

"We sold a player, Fernando Torres, for £50m, that we did not want to sell - we were forced to. Since apparently these contracts don’t seem to hold, we took the position that we're just not selling.

"It's been great for Luis, it's been great for us."

Manchester United, Liverpool & Manchester City announce US summer tour dates

Premier League trio Manchester United, Liverpool and Manchester City have announced their 2014 Guinness International Champions Cup fixtures, with the latter two sides facing each other on July 30 in New York.
Manchester United, Liverpool & Manchester City announce US summer tour dates
Manuel Pellegrini's outfit will take on Brendan Rodgers' men at Yankee Stadium in Group B, while David Moyes' side take on Italian duo Inter and Roma in Group A.

United take on the Giallorossi at Denver's Sports Authority Field on July 26, before travelling to Washington DC to face the Nerazzurri at the FedEx Field on July 29. Their game against Real Madrid has yet to be scheduled.

Manchester United group managing director Richard Arnold said: "These two matches against strong opposition will provide David Moyes and his team with valuable preparation for the 2014-15 season.

“The team last played in Washington DC in 2011 and the match against Barcelona was extremely well supported. This will be the team’s first visit to Denver and we are excited to meet our fans in this city for the first time."

Liverpool's summer excursion to the US will be the second of Rodgers' Anfield career, with Olympiakos first up in Group B at Soldier Field Stadium on July 27.

The Reds then face Pellegrini's City side at Yankee Stadium on July 30, before taking on AC Milan at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte on August 2.

City face Milan on July 27 at Heinz Field before the clash against Liverpool and finish up against the Greeks on August 2 at Bank of America Stadium.

"City have always enjoyed terrific support across the five boroughs having visited the states many times," City captain Vincent Kompany said.

"The passion of our New York fans was clear for all to see when we played at Yankee Stadium last year."

Nigeria's Dike out of World Cup

The striker had high hopes for 2014 but his dreams of representing the Super Eagles in Brazil have been devastated by injury

By Ives Galarcep

Nigeria's Dike out of World Cup
Toronto FC striker Bright Dike has been ruled out of Nigeria's World Cup campaign after suffering a torn Achilles.

Dike had been expected to play a key role for Toronto FC in 2014 and was a candidate for the Super Eagles' World Cup squad, but his latest injury has put an end to those dreams.

The injury comes almost two years after Dike suffered the very same problem with the Portland Timbers. He worked his way back from that injury and played well enough to attract the attention of the national side.

The 27-year-old showed some flashes of his pedigree for the Canadian club in 2013, but it was his goalscoring performance in Nigeria's 2-2 friendly clash against Italy in November that saw him rise to prominence.

Dike's injury will put more pressure on Toronto's forward pairing of Jermain Defoe and Gilberto and leave TFC scrambling to add further attacking options heading into the 2014 season.

Ronaldo leads Portugal to fourth in Fifa ranking
Portugal have jumped up to fourth in Fifa's world rankings, while World Cup holders Spain remain top dogs.
Vicente del Bosque's men lead the way ahead of Germany and Argentina in an unchanged top three, but Iberian neighbours Portugal - whom Cristiano Ronaldo fired to the World Cup this summer late last year - have leapfrogged Colombia into fourth.
Switzerland are up two places to sixth despite not playing a game since November, while Confederation Cup holders Brazil have risen to ninth, overtaking Netherlands.
Denmark are among the biggest movers, jumping from 25th to 20th, and France are up two spots to joint 18th with Ukraine, whom Didier Deschamps' side beat in a play-off in November to qualify for the World Cup.
World Cup debutants Bosnia & Herzegovina also rise two places to 17th, with United States and Chile up one spot each to 13th and 14th at the expense of England, who fall to 15th.
Cote d'Ivoire have dropped out of the top 20 after a six-place fall, but African rivals Cape Verde are up eight places to 27.
Mali are one of the list's biggest losers, dropping 19 places to 59th, while Ghana - who will look to replicate their run to the 2010 World Cup quarter-finals in Brazil later this year - have plummeted 13 spots to number 37.
Elsewhere, Armenia have moved inside the top 30, their highest ever Fifa ranking, after a World Cup qualification campaign that saw them narrowly miss out on a play-off spot.

Feisty Seville rivalry promises Europa League fireworks

The Andalusian city gears up for its first European derby on Thursday, but history suggests it may not be remembered only for the football

Feisty Seville rivalry promises Europa League fireworks
By Ryan Benson

It is Saturday, November 24, 2013. There is an excitable atmosphere in the Andalusian capital of Seville, with the colours green, red and white prominent just about everywhere in the city centre.

As you enter the Nervion district in the evening, you are greeted with a pungent assortment of smells as the combined stench of beer, police horses and burning rubber forces its way into your sinuses. After turning a corner, Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan is visible between apartment blocks, with a thronged mass of football fans amongst clouds of flare smoke swarming into the stadium's 45,500 capacity while police keep their distance.

These intimidating scenes can mean only one thing: El Derbi Sevillano.

Sevilla and Real Betis contest arguably the fiercest city rivalry in Spain, and history will be made on March 13 when the two face each other in Uefa competition for the very first time, with a Europa League quarter-final berth at stake.

The rivalry itself remains as bitter as ever, well over 100 years since a divide effectively saw the creation of Betis in 1907.

Sevilla's origins go back to 1890, 15 years earlier than their official date of formation in 1905, with British mineworkers having a particularly prominent role in the club's conception.

Historically, Sevilla were supported and run by those in the higher echelons of society. Such snobbery on their part led to prospective players being turned away for being "working men".

These views ultimately led to a breakaway and Betis subsequently merged with another local team – Sevilla Balompie – to create Betis Balompie. 'Real' was added seven years later by King Alfonso XIII, who also gave Real Madrid their royal name.

With Betis' creation prompting huge bitterness, controversy has rarely been far away from the two clubs' meetings. Their first official clash – in both senses of the word – was played in 1915 and it set a somewhat unpleasant precedent.

Sevilla claimed a 4-3 win, but the referee had to end the match prematurely. Fights broke out, before fans staged a pitch invasion, forcing the official's hand. But the most farcical meeting came three years later as Sevilla triumphed 22-0.

In response to Betis' two key players Candas and Artola getting called up for military service, the club protested by sending out a team including several youth-team players. Rarely has the cliche 'men versus boys' been more relevant.

More recently, tensions between the teams became stretched even at boardroom level. The reigns of Jose Maria del Nido and Manuel Ruiz de Lopera, respective presidents for Sevilla and Betis, overlapped by four years from 2002 until 2006 and they were not too fond of one another.

They were regularly accused of heightening hostilities between the clubs' ultras, and the October 2002 incident which saw Betis goalkeeper Toni Prats attacked while on the pitch was a prime example of matters getting out of hand.
Five years later the boot was on the other foot. In a March Copa del Rey quarter-final in Betis' stadium - named after president Lopera - Sevilla coach Juande Ramos was forced to spend a night in hospital after getting knocked unconscious by a bottle thrown from the home support.

Lopera had left his post the previous year, but his presence lingered on, before the stadium's former name – Benito Villamarin – returned in 2010.

The August 2007 passing of Sevilla and Spain player Antonio Puerta seemed to bring some relative respite from the rampant antipathy between the two sets of supporters, as the entire city mourned the Seville-born full-back, but the derby matches still have an ugly side.

Over the course of their last two meetings, some sections of the Betis supporters directed monkey chants at not only Sevilla players, but also two of their own - Nosa Igiebor in April 2013 and Paulao in November.

On the pitch, these games are fiercely-contested, ill-tempered and breathless duels. As with any derby match, emotions run high. But the Seville meeting regularly exceeds the fiery reputations of similar clashes.

Seven of the last eight matches between the two have included at least one sending off and one can expect comparable zeal in this two-legged Europa League affair, although probably for different reasons.

Considering Betis' disastrous season, bragging rights - not a European trophy - is their most realistic target. Sevilla, on the other hand, will be among the favourites for a final berth and the club pride themselves on their Uefa Cup successes of 2006 and 2007. Tarnishing their reputation at the hands of Betis would be unthinkable from their point of view.

This last-16 tie will be the first time since the bottle incident that these two have met over two legs. The first game will also be their first encounter with neither Lopera nor Del Nido involved, following the latter's seven-year prison sentence for fraud. The current regimes now sit at a crossroads in terms of how they develop an off-field relationship.

For the good of this fixture's on-pitch entertainment, though, animosity is not a bad thing. Players misbehaving on the field is a part of the sport, but that is where it must stay: on the pitch.

This double-header will be remembered for its historical standing as their first European face-off, but such a hostile rivalry has all the ingredients to be memorable for completely the wrong reasons.

Xavi: Barcelona are in for a tough time in the Champions League
The experienced midfielder has accepted that his side will have to go through some adversity as they hunt for European glory this season
Barcelona midfielder Xavi has accepted that his side are going to experience hard times as they go in search of the Champions League title.

The Blaugrana reached the last eight with a 4-1 aggregate victory over Manchester City, but were made to work hard for a 2-1 victory over Manuel Pellegrini's side during Wednesday's Camp Nou leg.

And the veteran midfielder believes his side have begun to recapture some of their best form, which will prove crucial as they look to mount a challenge for Europe's top prize.

"This is the Champions League and we know that at times we're going to have a hard time," he told the club's official website.

"I believe that we dominated the match, the sensations are good and the objective was to reach the quarter-finals - here we are, pleased with our victory.

"Our rivals also play, but we tried to have the ball and play our football.

"The coach is the one who decides how to play, and we have a big team and we're playing well. We've recovered our form.

"The fans were sensational and the atmosphere was extraordinary."
