Barclays Premier League leaders Arsenal begin 2014 with a home game against Cardiff City on New Year's Day. Having been briefly replaced at the top of the table by Manchester City on Saturday, Arsene Wenger's men returned to the summit 24 hours later courtesy of a battling 1-0 win at in-form Newcastle United. Arsenal will be aiming to claim another three points against a Cardiff side who have mustered one win in nine matches and sit 16th in the table, two points above the relegation zone. David Kerslake is set to be in caretaker charge of the Welsh outfit once again at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday after the dismisssal of Malky Mackay last week.
Kerslake oversaw Saturday's 2-2 home draw with Sunderland, which saw the League's bottom club come from two goals down to snatch a point, and is hopeful Cardiff can build on their display against Arsenal in the reverse fixture in November.
Although last season's Championship winners were beaten 3-0 that day, with former Cardiff midfielder Aaron Ramsey scoring twice, Arsenal only made the game safe with two goals in the final four minutes.
"We held our own against them," said Kerslake. "We know they are one of the finest sides in Europe. We had a good go at them here, so we go there in good spirits."

Cardiff's last victory over Arsenal came in February 1961, although the two sides have only met 12 times since.
German playmaker Mesut Ozil is likely to be unavailable for Wenger's men, having missed the win over Newcastle with a shoulder injury. Ramsey, one of the standout players in the Premier League this season, remains sidelined by a thigh problem, while Cardiff's Craig Bellamy is still battling a knee complaint.
Arsenal are unbeaten in eight League home games since losing to Aston Villa on the opening day of the season, but have been held to draws by Everton and Chelsea in their last two matches at the Emirates Stadium. Cardiff's only away win to date came at Fulham on 28 September.

Crystal Palace striker Cameron Jerome suffered a knee injury against Manchester City and will be assessed. Midfielders Stuart O'Keefe and Kagisho Dikgacoi are back in training after muscle injuries. Norwich's Gary Hooper was substituted on Saturday with a muscle problem, but the club are hopeful he will be fit. Jonny Howson is doubtful with a back problem that has ruled him out of the last three games, but Michael Turner returns after a ban.
In 21 seasons as a manager Tony Pulis has never been relegated. Keeping that enviable record intact looked a tall order when the Welshman began his reign at Crystal Palace with a 1-0 defeat at Norwich on the eve of advent.
Coupled with a recent seven-match losing streak, it left the Eagles marooned at the bottom of the table on seven points with confidence in short supply. But since then Pulis has galvanised his squad and the players have responded well, playing with resilience and energy. Improved performances yielded three wins in the next half a dozen matches elevating Palace out the drop zone.
If it wasn't for a 'man of the match' performance by England goalkeeper Joe Hart on Saturday, the Eagles might even have become the first visiting side to smuggle a point at title-chasing Manchester City.
Norwich will be looking for a new year tonic after back-to-back home defeats and a winless run of four matches. The Canaries will be glancing nervously over their shoulder, and likeable manager Chris Hughton is once again craving some consistency in a stuttering campaign.
Despite summer investment in excess of £20m, Norwich are six points worse off than at the midway mark last season.
It hasn't helped that they have yet to see the best of record-signing Ricky van Wolfswinkel, who is now fit after two months recovering from a toe injury.
However, the Dutchman's absence has coincided with Gary Hooper discovering the goal-scoring prowess that made the 25-year-old so prolific at Celtic. Norwich will also take heart from Saturday's enterprising first-half performance against Manchester United.
This match has all the characteristics of a six-pointer, particularly as the bottom 10 clubs are separated by just seven points.
A win for rejuvenated Crystal Palace would see them leapfrog Norwich on goal difference and climb further clear of the relegation zone.
But victory for Norwich will lift the Canaries towards mid-table and suddenly Palace would be back in hot water with four defeats in five matches.

Head-to-head
Norwich have failed to win their last 13 games away to Crystal Palace (D4, L9).
Their last victory away to Palace was a 1-0 win in a second-tier match on 5 May 1996 courtesy of a David Hopkin own goal.

Crystal Palace
Palace have lost three of their last four league games, scoring just twice.
They have managed just seven league goals at home this season, the joint lowest tally in the top flight (with Aston Villa).
The Eagles made 11 blocks against Manchester City, more than any other Premier League side at the weekend.

Norwich City
A defeat would mean the Canaries lose three successive league games for the first time this season.
That would be their worst top-flight run since a four-match losing streak between 22 December 2012 and 1 January 2013.
Norwich have kept clean sheets in their last two away league games.

Liverpool could welcome back Steven Gerrard after the England midfielder returned to training following a hamstring injury. Joe Allen (abductor strain) and Mamadou Sakho (hamstring) are likely to miss out after picking up knocks in Sunday's 2-1 defeat by Chelsea.Hull City boss Steve Bruce could keep faith with the side that thrashed Fulham 6-0 on Saturday. Winger Robbie Brady is a concern with his on-going groin problem.
They've gone from top at Christmas to fifth to start the new year, but if Liverpool can reproduce the consistent performances and points total of 2013 over the next 12 months, then their progress and strides forward will certainly continue.
Whilst they are still title challengers, a return to the top four was always the main objective and you sense they will never have a better chance of achieving that than this season. The omens are good - the team that has been top at Christmas has gone on to finish in the top four in each of the last 15 seasons.
Liverpool haven't beaten any of the four teams that start the year above them, but all of those fixtures have been away and they all have to visit Anfield in the second half of the campaign.
Their home form represents a positive turnaround. In seasons gone by they have struggled to beat the teams they've been expected to. However with the exception of a reverse against Southampton they've won every home game including the last six in a row and scored 23 goals in the process.
In contrast, goals had been hard to come by for Hull this season before their stunning victory over Fulham to end their memorable year on a high.
To begin the new year in 10th place with 23 points on the board is testament to the fantastic job Steve Bruce has done and has given them a real foundation to survive.
The 6-0 win against Fulham was a timely one ahead of games against Liverpool and Chelsea but they've asked questions of all the top teams so far and been competitive in most matches.
They'll have a game plan but will feel anything gained from this one will be an added bonus.
After a tough festive period on the road, Liverpool should relish being back home again.

Head-to-head
Hull's 3-1 win against Liverpool in December was the first time in their history the Tigers had beaten the Reds (D4, L12).
Liverpool have won three of their five Premier League matches with Hull.
Luis Suarez has never netted against Hull City - the only other current Premier League side he has failed to score against is Cardiff.
Two of Hull's seven Premier League goals scored against Liverpool have been own goals (from Jamie Carragher and Martin Skrtel)

Liverpool
The Merseysiders have lost their last two games in the Premier League - the first time this season they have suffered successive top-flight defeats.
However, the Reds have won their last six home games, winning eight of nine league matches at Anfield in total this term.
Only Manchester City (38) have scored more goals on home turf than Liverpool's tally of 25.
Of Luis Suarez's 19 goals in 2013-14, 16 have come against bottom-half opposition and just three against the top half (two versus Tottenham and one against Everton).
Liverpool have scored the first goal on 14 occasions this season - the joint-best record in the division.

Hull City
The Tigers ended a run of four games without a win with a 6-0 victory against Fulham last time out.
Robert Koren's brace in that win was the first time this season a Hull player had scored more than a single goal in a game.
Hull have never won a Premier League match in the month of January (D3, L4).
Steve Bruce is looking for a first home-away 'double' over Liverpool as a manager since his Birmingham side completed the feat in 2004-05.
With victory against Fulham, Hull became the fourth team this season to score five or more goals in a game after Liverpool, Manchester City and Newcastle.

Sunderland duo Adam Johnson and Fabio Borini are doubtful through illness, while John O'Shea has a shoulder problem and will also be assessed.Defender Wes Brown serves the final game of a three-match ban.Aston Villa will monitor the fitness of Christian Benteke (knee) and defender Ron Vlaar (calf) as they look to end a run of five games without a win. Vlaar's possible return would be timely as fellow centre-back Ciaran Clark serves a one-game ban.Though it is Sunderland who reside at the foot of the Premier League table there's a distinct feeling that it is they and not opponents Aston Villa who go into the new year with a great deal more to be positive about.
Unbeaten in their last four league games, three of which were away, Gus Poyet's side are exhibiting the qualities essential to mount a survival bid.
In addition, the psychological boost they received by knocking Chelsea out of the League Cup will have energised them still further and given them genuine belief that they have it within them to disprove the theory that the side at the bottom at Christmas is a virtual certainty to be playing Championship football next season. The visitors are in the midst of a miserable sequence of results; without a win in five, their draw with Swansea at the weekend ended a run of four straight defeats.
They were booed off by their disconsolate supporters, and may be relieved to playing away, where they've been far more effective throughout Paul Lambert's reign.
Another defeat at the Stadium of Light though and they will have allowed the hosts to move to within just three points of them. Like it or not, they'll be the side in the sights of the bottom three.
With fixtures against Arsenal and Liverpool looming straight after, they can ill-afford to begin 2014 by succumbing to the Black Cats.
It's also a clash of the side with the most red cards (Sunderland) against the one with the most yellows (Villa), and considering there have been four sending offs in the last six meetings, perhaps we should expect a feisty afternoon.
It all points to a fixture of both intensity and nervousness in equal measure.

Head-to-head
Aston Villa are unbeaten against Sunderland in their last five fixtures, scoring nine and conceding three (W2, D3).
The Black Cats have won four, drawn four and lost four of 12 Premier League home games against Villa.
Villa have the better overall record, with 78 wins to Sunderland's 54 in head-to-head fixtures.

Sunderland
Sunderland are currently on a four-match unbeaten run (W1, D3).
The Black Cats have failed to win any of their nine games against bottom-half opposition this season.
Two of Sunderland's three Premier League wins in 2013-14 have come at the Stadium of Light.
Four teams in the Premier League have scored more goals than Sunderland and Villa's combined total of 33 prior to the latest round of matches.
27% of Sunderland's goals have been scored in the opening 15 minutes, the highest proportion in the Premier League this season.

Aston Villa
Paul Lambert's side are without a win in their last five games.
If the Villans fail to win it will be their longest sequence without a league victory since an eight-game run between December 2012 and February 2013.
Villa have lost half as many games (3) away from home as they have at Villa Park (6).
Only Fulham (14) have conceded the first goal in a game more frequently than Aston Villa (12).
Aston Villa have scored just two goals in their last five matches.
Villa captain Ron Vlaar scored his first goal for the club against Sunderland in the 6-1 victory last April.

Two of the last three meetings between the teams at the DW Stadium have ended 0-0.

Derby are hopeful that midfield duo Will Hughes and Jeff Hendrick will be available for the game.
Hughes was replaced after 76 minutes of the 1-1 Boxing Day draw at Huddersfield with a groin problem while Hendrick missed it with concussion.

Head-to-head
Barnsley have won just one of the last seven matches they have played against Derby. Last season they shared a 1-1 draw at Oakwell after a 2-0 win for Derby at Pride Park.
Both teams have scored in each of the last three meetings at Barnsley.
Derby have not won on any of their last five visits to Oakwell, a run stretching back to March 2007.
Derby's 2-1 victory there in March 2007 remains their only win at Oakwell since 1993.

Barnsley
Barnsley are one point adrift at the foot of the Championship table and still seek their first win since Danny Wilson's return to the club on 17 December. They have drawn one and lost one since his re-appointment as manager.
They have won just one of their last 10 Championship matches, a 2-1 win at Brighton under the caretaker guidance of Micky Mellon.

Stoke boss Mark Hughes is without Glenn Whelan and Marc Wilson after they were both sent off against Newcastle.
Goalkeeper Asmir Begovic is out for up to six weeks after breaking a finger.
With fixtures coming thick and fast over the holiday period it's the time of year when there have to be compromises in the official matchday programmes. At least one article purportedly from the manager or captain has to start with the words "printing deadlines mean I am writing this before our Christmas action gets underway."
Imagine the scene in the office at Tottenham, as staff earlier this month debated what articles they could commission for the home games against West Bromwich Albion and Stoke.
Ideas are flowing as to how they can fill two magazines, and I can exclusively reveal a few of the features planned back in early December for the Stoke issue, the last of 2013:
An in-depth interview with head coach Andre Villas-Boas, looking at the season so far, but printing deadlines mean it can only take in the campaign up to the Liverpool match.
The "Where Are They Now?" feature focusing on Emmanuel Adebayor, who hasn't been seen in a Spurs shirt for a while.
A behind-the-scenes piece with Tim Sherwood, as he outlines his plans for 2014 in his role as technical co-ordinator.
Obviously all these ideas had to be binned, but as you read the matchday programme this weekend spare a thought for the people who put them together. At least Tottenham have had time to change their plans for the content after an eventful month at White Hart Lane.
If you're thinking this hasn't got a great deal to do with the usual BBC-type preview of Tottenham against Stoke then you're right. But "family commitments and deadlines mean I am writing this before the Christmas action gets underway."

Head-to-head
Tottenham have only lost two of their last 38 home league meetings with Stoke City (W28, D8, L2).
The Potters have won just three of their 10 previous Premier League meetings with Spurs.

Tottenham
Tottenham's league record at White Hart Lane this season is the worst among sides in the top half of the table. They have won just three of their nine matches and scored only eight goals.
They have only managed to score more than one goal in two of their last 11 home games in the Premier League.
After seven clean sheets in their opening 10 league matches, they have not kept one in any of their last eight.
This game will take place exactly six years after Tottenham beat Reading 6-4, one of only six Premier League games to see 10 or more goals.

Stoke
Their defeat by Newcastle was only their second in nine league matches.
They have conceded 15 goals in their last five away matches.
Stoke have played 29 Premier League games in London and have scored more than once in only two of them (17 goals in total).

Newcastle midfielder Cheick Tiote will return to the squad after missing the win over Stoke through suspension.Manager Alan Pardew has no new injury concerns, with Jonas Gutierrez still recovering from a calf problem. Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey misses out with a thigh injury picked up in the Boxing Day win over West Ham.
But Jack Wilshere is available after suspension and Tomas Rosicky could return after being rested against the Hammers. Classic repeats are a staple of Christmas TV, and MotD2 viewers on Sunday certainly wouldn't mind a reprise of what happened when these two teams met exactly a year ago. On 29 December 2012, Arsenal beat Newcastle 7-3 in one of the highest-scoring matches of the Premier League era.
You can't rule it out happening again - both teams have already been involved in goalfests in December, with the Gunners losing 6-3 at Manchester City while Newcastle put five past Stoke on Boxing Day.
And this fixture has a habit of throwing up big scores, with Newcastle having fought back from 4-0 down to earn an unlikely point in February 2011.
Newcastle's Boxing Day win was helped by red cards for two Stoke players - and their manager - but that shouldn't detract from the form the Magpies have shown throughout November and December, when they have picked up 21 points out of a possible 27.
Depending on other results on Sunday, Alan Pardew's side could find themselves going into 2014 in the top four.
Arsenal's 1-0 win in the corresponding fixture on the final day of last season clinched their place in the top four but the Gunners currently have their eyes on a higher prize.
Manager Arsene Wenger said the fighting spirit his side showed to come back against West Ham, ending a run of three games without a win, has proved that Arsenal are title contenders.
And they now have the chance to go into the New Year top of the table, something they haven't done since 2007-08.
That season, they slipped up in the second half of the campaign to finish third - should they go into 2014 top of the pile, Arsenal fans must hope that a repeat of that particular ending doesn't get an airing.

Head-to-head
There were 11 goals in the two meetings between these sides last season but only one came at St James' Park, where Arsenal won 1-0. The Gunners won 7-3 at the Emirates.
Newcastle have won just one of their last 12 Premier League games against Arsenal (W1, D5, L6).
The Magpies have not won on any of the last six occasions they have hosted Arsenal in the league (D4, L2).

Newcastle
Newcastle have won seven of their last nine games.
The Magpies have scored in 15 of their last 16 league games, only failing to score in a 0-3 defeat against Swansea.
Yoan Gouffran has scored in five consecutive Premier League home games for Newcastle United.

Arsenal
Arsenal's victory against West Ham on Boxing Day came after three games without a win, the Gunners' worst run of the season.
Alongside Tottenham, Arsenal have won the most points away from home in the Premier League this season (19).
Arsenal have won the most Premier League points in 2013, and their current 79-point tally in the year cannot be surpassed by any other side.

Norwich midfielder Jonny Howson will face a fitness test on the back injury that has kept him out for two matches. Defender Michael Turner is suspended after receiving his fifth yellow card of the season on Boxing Day.
Manchester United right-back Rafael is doubtful after coming off with a groin injury against Hull.
Antonio Valencia is suspended after picking up a red card in that game, while Phil Jones is out for a fortnight with a knee injury.
Norwich may sit with three teams between them and the bottom three but Chris Hughton will not be fooled by that; one bad day and they could be in the relegation zone themselves.
The Boxing Day defeat at home to Fulham was damaging enough in itself without being seriously compounded by away wins for Sunderland and Crystal Palace which drew Norwich further back into the discomfort zone.
The likeable Hughton now has something of a selection dilemma; does he take the view that New Year's Day and the trip to Palace is such a six-pointer that it's worth preserving the legs of some of his key men against United - a match they might lose anyway, whatever team he picks?
I don't see the Norwich boss going down that route. After all, Norwich beat United in this game last season, and what better way to get tiredness out of your legs and confidence coursing through your veins than a really good display against the champions?
They have some really good players at Carrow Road, and with Gary Hooper beginning to show that goals are his stock in trade, I still firmly believe that they are good enough to stay up - but they are just a defeat or two from a real crisis.
United seem to have ridden out their own tempest with some impressive character. Three consecutive league wins have put them back on the margins of the title race and calmed the nerves at Old Trafford.
In fact, United seem happier away from home at the moment - they have not lost in 10 trips over the course of more than three months.
Less than three weeks ago, David Moyes' side were ninth, 13 points behind the leaders, now they are seventh having cut the deficit to eight points. If they can hang in there until Van Persie and Vidic are fit, United will ensure that the leading pack need to keep glancing over their shoulders now and again.
As the announcer on the London Underground says: "Mind the Gap".

Head-to-head
Norwich have beaten Manchester United on two of the three occasions they have hosted them in the Premier League.
But United have won 4-0 the last two times that the teams have met, including in the League Cup in October.

Norwich
Norwich have only lost four of their 18 Premier League home games in 2013.
The Canaries have picked up five points from the 15 available so far in December.
Only Fulham (35) have conceded more than the 31 league goals that Norwich have let in this season.
Gary Hooper has scored in each of Norwich's last four home games, and has scored four of their last six league goals.

Manchester United
They have won five successive league and cup matches for the first time under David Moyes, and are aiming for a season's best fourth league win in a row.
United have done better on the road than at Old Trafford season. They have earned 17 points from nine away games, and 14 from their nine home games.
The Red Devils have not lost away from home in any competition since Manchester City defeated them 4-1 in September (W6, D4).

Craig Bellamy misses out because of a knee injury, but there are no new injury concerns. Sunderland boss Gus Poyet is without the suspended Wes Brown, while fellow defender John O'Shea could again be absent with a shoulder injury.Keiren Westwood and Carlos Cuellar remain on the sidelines.
So, after months of undermining and destabilising his manager, Cardiff City's owner Vincent Tan has finally made the move to sack Malky Mackay. In my original preview of this match I openly wondered how much longer their non-existent relationship could go on for. I did think Mackay was still going to be the one I was interviewing after this particular match, but long term there seemed only one outcome.
I think someone's going to have a decent manager very soon, and I'm not talking about Cardiff. Having taken them to the League Cup final in 2012 and promotion earlier this year, Mackay is likely to be a man in demand and won't be twiddling his thumbs for long.
That's not to say all was well on the pitch. The fans protested against Tan before the kick off onBoxing Day, but Thursday's defeat was their fifth in the last eight matches.
Southampton cut Cardiff's defence to shreds in the opening half an hour and the owner clearly didn't take kindly to seeing his club three goals down by half time for the second time inside a week.
It isn't just the goals they're conceding that are the problem - Cardiff are finding scoring at the other end particularly tricky at the moment.
Things aren't about to get any easier at the start of the new year either, with three of the next four matches away to Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United.
It puts a premium on getting something from this one against Sunderland and the visit of West Ham on 14 January. It also adds to the urgency of getting a good replacement in quickly, though it sounds as though feelers have already been put out.
Sunderland will travel to South Wales with an extra spring in their step following an unexpected three points at Everton on Boxing Day.
Gus Poyet acknowledged Tim Howard's red card changed the game and the performance of his own goalkeeper Vito Mannone probably won it for them, but he'll take the points however they come.
The victory brings them right back up on everyone else's coat tails and there are now eight teams separated by just six points at the bottom.
It looks like it isn't just the title race that promises to be exciting and nerve-shredding this season.

Head-to-head
This is the first top-flight meeting between the clubs since the 1956-57 season.
They last met in the Championship in the 2006-07 season. Both sides enjoyed away victories.

Cardiff
The Bluebirds have managed one win and five points from their last eight games.
They have taken seven points from the last 15 available at home.
Cardiff have scored just five goals in their last 10 Premier League games.
They have scored only eight goals in nine home league matches this season.

Sunderland
Sunderland won their first away game this season against Everton on Boxing Day. In 2013, they have won just three of 18 away league matches (W3, D3, L12).
They have been given more red cards in Premier League games than any other side this season (five).
The Black Cats have won only one of their 12 final games of the year in the Premier League (3-1 v Bolton in 2007).

Injured Aston Villa pair Ron Vlaar and Christian Benteke will again be missing for Saturday's visit of Swansea.Midfielder Ashley Westwood is available after serving a one-match ban. Swansea boss Michael Laudrup is expected to freshen up his side, with the likes of Wilfried Bony, Pablo Hernandez and Jonathan de Guzman all in contention to start. However, the quartet of Michu, Nathan Dyer, Michel Vorm and Garry Monk remain sidelined by injury.
Given the recent fortunes of these two clubs you sense this fixture has taken on greater significance, with an opportunity to end the year on a high.
Villa have now lost four games in a row, while the excursions of the Europa League mean Swansea have taken just 10 points from the last 10 games.
Paul Lambert says it is his job to look upwards but the harsh reality of his team's situation is that they are very much looking over their shoulder.
They are just one point better off than this stage last season, when they endured a long winter before their positive end to the campaign. The biggest concern will be their home form. They have lost six of their nine games at Villa Park this season but the problem is more deep rooted - the home supporters have seen only 11 victories in the last 47.
Villa haven't scored in five of their last six games at home and their total of only six goals is the worst in any of the four top divisions. It is little wonder the natives are restless.
There will be anxiety in the air and Swansea will look to capitalise on that. Michael Laudrup's team have won more games away than at the Liberty stadium.
Despite the fact they are without the injured Michu and are waiting for record signing Wilfried Bony to really start firing, only eight teams have scored more goals than them so far this season.
Whatever the outcome, the Welsh side will look back on 2013 with fond memories. A fifth straight defeat for Villa and they will certainly be glad to see it end.

Head-to-head
Swansea have lost eight of their nine previous league trips to Villa Park, failing to score in all eight defeats. Their solitary win was by 2-0 on 2 January 2012.
This is only the 22nd meeting between the sides. Aston Villa have won 15, Swansea four and there have been two draws.

Aston Villa
Aston Villa have lost four successive league matches. They have not lost five games in a row since January 2001.
They have lost more than half of their last 47 Premier League matches at Villa Park, earning just 45 points in that period (W11, D12, L24).
Paul Lambert's side have not scored in five of their last six Premier League home games. Villa's tally of six goals at home is the lowest in the division and they are the only side yet to score in the first half in front of their own fans.
Villa have failed to score in half of their league matches this season, the joint-worst record in the division.

Swansea
Swansea are enduring a four-match winless streak (D2, L2), their worst run of the season.
They have only won two of their last 10 league matches.
The Swans have benefited from five own goals this season. Apart from when Manchester United had 10 in 2009-10, no team has had more than six in one season.
They are unbeaten after scoring first (W5, D2) but have only taken two points from 10 games after conceding the opening goal.

Downing's men have been in dismal form of late, picking up just a point from their last five top-flight matches and winning only once on the road in the Premier League this season. Their most recent fixture saw them hold Tottenham 1-1 at White Hart Lane, but they will go into the final game of the calendar year in 15th place - a point off the drop zone. While West Brom have failed to beat West Ham in their last five attempts, Sam Allardyce's side have been in awful form of late themselves.
Just three points separate the two teams, with the London club failing to win in the league throughout December - their most recent defeat coming against Arsenal on Thursday.
Allardyce will hope for improvements in his forward line having averaged less than a goal a game in the top flight this term, although they remain without club-record signing Andy Carroll.
His absence has played a big part in West Ham's struggles, although fellow striker Carlton Cole has scored in his last two outings.
West Brom, who lost their first three games of the month, were able to stop the rot with a last-gasp draw against Hull City and followed that up with a hard-fought point against Tottenham on Boxing Day.
They will likely fall further into the relegation mire with defeat in east London but, based on the sides' recent head-to-head record, a point looks the most likely outcome on Saturday.
Four of the last five fixtures between the pair have ended in a stalemate, with two of those goalless.
Victor Anichebe and Nicolas Anelka are both suffering with groin injuries and are unlikely to feature for the visitors while Allardyce's only fresh injury concern is James Collins, who limped out of the 3-1 defeat to Arsenal.A Capital One Cup semi-final place is all well and good, but West Ham need to start picking up Premier League points.
Goals remain the Hammers’ big problem and Arsenal’s defence will be confident of not suffering a Christmas hangover at Upton Park.
With a tricky trip to Newcastle three days later, Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger may well look to rest a few of his players.
West Ham may also have an eye on more winnable games against West Brom and Fulham....

West Ham United will host West Bromwich Albion at Upton Park this weekend, in what could be a vital match for each team's relegation prospects.
The Hammers are currently 19th in the table following their Boxing Day defeat to Arsenal, and are in danger of being cut adrift with Sunderland at the bottom of the table.
They have lost four of their last five games in the league, and have not picked up three points since their 3-0 victory over Fulham in November.
West Brom earned a 1-1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur on Boxing Day, but extended their winless run to eight league games.
They have not won since beating fellow strugglers Crystal Palace 2-0 at the start of November, with their poor form costing Steve Clarke his position as manager.
West Ham defender James Collins picked up a knock against Arsenal and is a doubt, while Victor Anichebe was not included in West Brom's squad against Spurs and may miss out again.

Possible starting lineups

West Ham: Adrian, O'Brien, Tomkins, Demel, McCartney, Jarvis, Nolan, J Cole, Noble, Diame, C Cole

Everton welcome back midfielder James McCarthy after a one-match ban.
Gerard Deulofeu is out for at least six weeks with a hamstring injury, while Leighton Baines could make his comeback against Sunderland on Boxing Day.
When Swansea City made the lengthy trip home from Merseyside in September 1930, they will certainly have taken with them some painful memories of their first ever meeting with Everton - a crushing 5-1 defeat.
Back in South Wales a few months later those cruel lessons had clearly not been heeded, as again they conceded five times in succumbing to their new foes. Incredibly, 83 years later, the Swans are still seeking their first ever victory against the Toffees. In 17 attempts, five draws is the best Swansea have been able to secure, and despite their buoyant form since being promoted, they've yet to register even a single goal in Premier League meetings.
Their latest match-up may well be the most challenging so far for them, as Everton will arrive with just one league defeat against them this campaign, a record that only Bayern Munich and Roma can better in Europe's elite leagues.
It's a game which will again bring Roberto Martinez back to the club where he first cut his managerial teeth and, though he's been up against them before with Wigan, his presence always seems to stir up the locals.
It will only add to the intrigue as Everton continue their quest to keep pace with the top four - particularly so as they follow Sunday's game with two successive home matches.
They won't lack confidence either after their last two away days - there will be few sides this season who will travel to the Emirates and Old Trafford and come back with four points in the bank.
The Swans have only won two of their last 12 league and cup games and at the start of the weekend sit seven points above the bottom three and seven below the top six. With a fixture list which includes, Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United in the next three weeks, ending their Everton hoodoo would be very timely.

Head-to-head
Swansea have failed to win any of their 17 league and cup games against Everton (D5, L12).
The Swans have failed to score in the four previous Premier League meetings between the sides (D1, L3).
Roberto Martinez has failed to win his four previous Premier League games against Swansea (D1, L3).

Swansea City
Swansea have lost just once in their last six Premier League games (W2, D3).
They have failed to win the last six top-flight matches they have played on a Sunday (D3, L3).
The Swans have had more possession than their opponents in all eight of their Premier League home games this season, but have won just 10 points from a possible 24 (W2 D4 L2) at the Liberty Stadium.
Michu has failed to score in his last seven Premier League appearances - his longest drought since joining Swansea.

Everton
Seamus Coleman's goal last weekend means Everton defenders have contributed seven Premier League goals this season - a division high, prior to this weekend.
The Toffees have lost just one of their 16 Premier League games this season. In the top five European leagues, only Bayern Munich and AS Roma have better records.
They have lost seven points from winning positions this season. Prior to this weekend, only Manchester City (eight) and Sunderland (11) had worse records.
They are one of three clubs yet to win a Premier League penalty this season, along with Newcastle and Cardiff.
